Aston Villa eyeing Rodrigo De Paul swoop

Aston Villa will reportedly look to sign 30-year-old Argentine international Rodrigo De Paul from La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Rodrigo De Paul is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are keen on reinforcing their midfielder unit in the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the Atletico Madrid star. They already “made an attempt” to sign the 30-year-old World Cup winner in the coming months.

Rodrigo De Paul and his stint in La Liga thus far

Rodrigo De Paul has established himself as one of the most dependable midfielders in La Liga since joining Atletico Madrid from Udinese in July 2021. The South American midfielder has come leaps and bounds in the last four years, with his combativeness suiting Diego Simeone’s style at Estadio Metropolitano.

The 30-year-old has turned out 179 times thus far for Atletico Madrid while chipping in with 14 goals and 25 assists. De Paul has also enjoyed success in international football, winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the two most recent Copa America editions with Argentina.

However, the Argentine international faces an uncertain future at Estadio Metropolitano heading into the summer transfer window after entering the final 15 months of his contract with Atletico Madrid. The situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Aston Villa’s interest in Rodrigo De Paul is understandable. The Villans are combing the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window, with Unai Emery keen on adding more quality to his squad ahead of the 2025/26 season. So, several candidates have emerged on Aston Villa’s radar, with De Paul also a viable target.

The Villans have already “made an attempt” to sign the 30-year-old World Cup winner from Atletico Madrid. The experienced midfielder’s contract situation at the Spanish club makes him an attractive target for the West Midlands outfit.

So, amid the bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the Villans are also rightly planning for the summer transfer window. While Sverre Nypan is reportedly closing in on joining Aston Villa, it will be interesting to see if De Paul accompanies him to Villa Park in the coming months.
