According to a report from Fichajes, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are all interested in acquiring the services of Barcelona midfield star Frenkie de Jong. The Catalan giants could consider parting ways with the Dutch international amidst their financial struggles and his contract situation.
De Jong made quite a name for himself while playing for Ajax. His impressive performances had put him on the radar of multiple top clubs from across Europe but in the end, Barcelona managed to win the race for his signature.
He has been a part of their first team setup since the summer of 2019 and has only gone from strength to strength in the last few seasons. The Dutch international didn’t have the best of starts to the season following his return from an ankle injury.
He wasn’t an integral part of Hansi Flick’s plans in the initial phase of the season but has managed to establish himself as a key figure of late. While he has been a regular starter in the cup competitions, De Jong has only had 857 minutes of La Liga action this season.
Despite the mixed season, he is quite happy at the Catalan club. However, he might not have a future there as recent reports suggest Barcelona could consider cashing in on him amidst their financial struggles.
He will only have a year left on his deal in the summer, as a result, Flick’s team have been pushing for a renewal. But securing his long-term future with a new deal at lower wages won’t be that straightforward. If they fail to convince him to put pen to paper, they could end up listening to offers as it with help improve their finances.
There is interest in his services from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City which certainly gives Barcelona the opportunity to raise a significant fee from his departure. Arne Slot wants more quality in the centre of the park. He wants to bring in someone who can help better control the tempo of the game.
Slot believes he can build a dynamic engine room in midfield with De Jong, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta is also keen on adding him to their squad as he feels De Jong could add more tactical intelligence and composure to their midfield.
