Coppa Italia Flop to Spell the End of Conceiçao at Milan

Sergio Conceiçao would have had some small chances to stay on the Milan bench by triumphing in the Coppa Italia, but the Rossoneri laid an egg against Bologna, and the coach’s faith is most likely sealed.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the brass will move on from the Portuguese gaffer and João Félix. The latter got off to a decent start but quickly fell out of favor due to his poor performances despite his bond with the gaffer.

It won’t be hard or expensive for Milan to sack Conceiçao. His contract envisages a clause to rescind it in the summer. Other candidates had turned down what was de facto a seasonal deal after Paulo Fonseca’s ousting. Neither will be on the books next year. Their former tactician was quickly appointed by Olympique Lyonnais.

CEO Giorgio Furlani didn’t mince words following the Coppa Italia loss talking to Mediaset (via Corriere della Sera).

“We can’t deny that this is a disastrous season. Despite winning the Supercoppa, we’re distant from the goals we had set for ourselves. We have to finish it the best we can. We share the disappointment of the fans. There have been mistakes. We have to look ahead to correct them and get back to where we all expect to be.”

Our Take on Milan and Conceiçao

His run in the cup kept his tenure in life support, but in reality, he seemingly lost the backing of the front office not long after being hired. Picking the right coach won’t be enough to right the ship and return to contention. At least the squad isn’t too shabby if it performs to the peak of its capabilities, which happens too rarely.
