Speaking following the announcement of the Germany squad for the Nations League finals (via @iMiaSanMia), Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that Marc-André ter Stegen will return as the number one.
On the Barcelona goalkeeper, Nagelsmann said:
“I’ve always emphasized that Marc is our #1. I spoke to Hansi and he said that Marc is showing top performances and is in top shape. He played two games and will probably play again on Sunday. We’re looking forward to having him back. It’s the right decision”
ter Stegen has missed a large portion of the season after suffering a knee injury with Barcelona back in September. The 33-year-old recently made his return to regularly featuring for the LaLiga champions. ter Stegen had only been number one for one international break following the retirement of Manuel Neuer after EURO 2024 last summer.
While the Mönchengladbach native was absent, Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel shared the goalkeeping duties, before Baumann then became the interim number one.
During the mini-tournament, Germany will face Portugal in the first semi-final in Munich, before potentially facing the winner of France vs Spain in Munich once again in the final. If they lose to Portugal, Germany will face the loser of the other semi-final in Stuttgart.
