Not even one week has elapsed since the final matchday of the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign. German Europa League representatives SC Freiburg have nevertheless remained on the front foot, confirming their fourth summer signing on Friday afternoon. The Breisgau-based club have snapped up veteran defender Anthony Jung on a free transfer.
Jung recently departed Werder Bremen after a long stint with the Hanseatic City State Club. With the 33-year-old, Freiburg have procured the ideal replacement for the recently retired Manuel Gulde. Jung brings with him the experience of 109 top flight fixtures whilst representing Bremen and Ingolstadt 04. He also played for RBLeipzig and FSV Frankfurt in the lower divisions.
Freiburg also confirmed the signings of Cyriaque Irié and Yuito Suzuki this week. The rumored purchase of Hertha BSC striker and German youth international Derry Scherhant is also through. Freiburg took advantage of an exit clause in the 22-year-old’s 2. Bundesliga contract, acquiring the former first division player for a reported €2m.
“From the very beginning [in my talks with Freiburg], I felt a certain energy and drive towards working together mutually,” Scherhant noted at his unveiling on Wednesday. “I’m really happy. I’ve decided to give it my all in order to get as many minutes of playing time as possible. I’m just really looking forward to the coming season in Freiburg.“
“When I heard that there was a possibility of coming to Freiburg, I pricked up my ears and listened very carefully,” Jung added today. “The talks were extremely positive and made my decision easy. Freiburg has consistently taken the next step in recent years and is a good example of how a club can develop. I’m still extremely ambitious and happy to be here now.“
