Chelsea tracking Julian Alvarez at Atletico Madrid

Chelsea will compete with Barcelona in the race to sign 25-year-old Argentine international Julian Alvarez from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid next year.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on Chelsea Chronicle, Julian Alvarez is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are surprisingly keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a versatile attacker next year. So, the 25-year-old Atletico Madrid forward has emerged as a target for the West London club.

However, Chelsea will not be alone in the race to sign Alvarez, as Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on signing the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner. Interestingly, the two European bigwigs are appealing destinations for Alvarez, and the 2024/25 FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League winners face a tall order to secure his services.

Julian Alvarez and his explosion at Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez has established himself as one of the world’s best strikers since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in a surprise big-money move last year. While the 25-year-old did not hit the ground running at Estadio Metropolitano, he has not looked back since becoming a pivotal figure for Los Rojiblancos.

The Argentine international has been hot off the blocks in the 2025/26 season, amassing nine goals and five assists in 18 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Alvarez’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several European bigwigs. Barcelona and Chelsea are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

A man in demand

Julian Alvarez has been on Barcelona’s radar for several months. The continued interest makes sense, as Robert Lewandowski is in the twilight of his career. So, the Blaugrana should plan for life after the veteran Polish striker. Alvarez has thus reportedly emerged as the priority target for Barcelona heading into next summer’s transfer window.

As for Chelsea, the West London club wanted to sign Alvarez before he joined Atletico Madrid. The continued interest is perplexing, as they signed Liam Delap and Joao Pedro in the summer transfer window. Additionally, Emanuel Emegha will arrive at Stamford Bridge next year. So, it is unclear how Alvarez fits into the scheme of things unless he plays behind the central striker.

However, while Chelsea may be an intriguing option for Alvarez, Barcelona and PSG appeal more to the 25-year-old Argentine international. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the World Cup winner amid escalating interest in him.
