Why Kenan Yildiz’s renewal is a big deal for Serie A

Earlier today, Serie A giants Juventus confirmed and announced the contract renewal of Kenan Yildiz. The agreement took a while in coming through, as the two parties hassled over wages.

There was the involvement of Jorge Mendes in possibly listening to suitors. But it became clear that the Turk was always focused on staying in Turin, becoming a hero and committing his future. Juve met his salary and the deal was done.

The 20-year-old also seemed to be given special treatment, as his renewal was announced during a press conference. It felt like Juve were sending a message through that, making it clear that he is their superstar and they are publicly giving him that tag – almost literally.

It is most definitely good news for the Bianconeri. They haven’t been the most stable footballing entity for a while. Yildiz represents hope when they really need it and at a time when they are badly in need of lofty characters and personalities. Yildiz has shown signs of being that, especially through his performances.

Beyond that though, this is massive for Serie A.

The league is no stranger to seeing superstars depart. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is a classic case and so is Sandro Tonali. Romelu Lukaku also left for Chelsea some years ago when he was at his peak. All of this became a symbol of the Serie A’s declining value and financial prowess. While all of that is still true, Yildiz staying and renewing presents a possible change in fortunes.

If not that, it helps the league keep one of the best talents in the game. Arguably, Yildiz is one of the best attackers in the game right now too – alongside someone like Rafael Leao and Lautaro Martinez. These are long-standing names that have stood by their clubs, making a mark in times of trouble.

Juve have lacked that and they have someone to constantly cling onto now. Serie A has a superstar who can be the face of the league and it is also key to note that Yildiz already appeals to the younger population in Italy. He has a distinct celebration and he responds on the pitch too.

That is everything Serie A needs.
