Michael Carrick has done wonders for Manchester United since taking charge as their caretaker manager for the rest of the season. While he is certainly making a case to get the job on a permanent basis, United are still on the lookout for the best possible options to be their next manager.
While there are quite a few top names on their wishlist, another world-class manager has just become available, and he is now the front-runner to get the job. As per a report from Fichajes, Roberto De Zerbi is leading the race to be the next United boss after having parted ways with Olympique Marseille.
The Italian manager has just ended his stint at the French club by mutual consent. Following their struggles, this season, both parties felt it was the right time to part ways. Failure to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League and the fact that they are nowhere in the title race have played a big part in his departure.
After taking charge in the summer of 2024, De Zerbi did wonders for the French outfit. While he showcased a lot of promise in his first season, the Italian hasn’t managed to replicate it this time around. Their recent humiliation (5-0 defeat) at the hands of rivals PSG at Parc des Princes was the point of no return for the manager.
While things didn’t quite work out for him in French football, De Zerbi is quite highly rated because of the work he has done over the years. He transformed Brighton back in the day, and given his impact in the Premier League, Manchester United are one of the clubs that are interested in having him on their bench.
Following Ruben Amorim’s sacking, Carrick has taken charge for the time being. While he is doing wonders, the Red Devils are on the lookout for their next boss. They see De Zerbi as an ideal candidate to lead a major rebuild. His style of play and his commitment to youngsters are major reasons why they want him.
The report suggests the 46-year-old is not just another candidate; he is out-and-out favourite to take the job ahead of next season. The majority of the people at the club are in favour of his appointment.
