Borussia Dortmund continue to celebrate Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy’s return to form. Guirassy’s goal in last night’s Champions League victory enabled the 29-year-old to extend his current scoring streak to four games across all competitions. Upon netting the opening goal against Atalanta Bergamo in the 3rd minute, Guirassy lifted up his BVB tricot to reveal a personal message directed at a family member.
Guirassy paid tribute to his niece Aissata Guirassy, who had recently passed away. The 26-times-capped Guinean international confirmed this whilst speaking to Prime Video last night. Guirassy dedicated his 16th goal across all competitions this season to his brother and family. The striker expressed his condolences for the “difficult time” his relatives were going through.
The gesture caught BVB head coach Niko Kovac unawares. Kovac declined to comment on Guirassy’s goal celebration whilst speaking at the post match press conference. The 54-year-old nevertheless did take the opportunity to praise his resurgent attacker, as did BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
“Serhou not only scored one goal and set up another,” Kovac noted at the press conference. “He also kept possession and put pressure on the opposition. He ran a lot and worked hard.“
“He worked hard and believed in himself,” Kehl added in the mixed zone. “Today, he was once again extremely difficult to defend against. And he hasn’t lost his nose for goal. The Champions League is kind of his thing. I’m delighted that he’s back on track at the right moment.”
