Crystal Palace eyeing Gareth Southgate as interim appointment

Crystal Palace will reportedly look to appoint 55-year-old English tactician Gareth Southgate as an interim head coach if they sack Oliver Glasner.

According to a report by Football Insider, Gareth Southgate is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace. The Eagles are scouring the managerial market for an interim replacement for Oliver Glasner amid mounting pressure on the Austrian tactician. So, they are working on the deal to land the 55-year-old former England head coach.

Gareth Southgate and his career so far

Gareth Southgate has been a polarising figure since entering the managerial world in 2006. A defender and a midfielder as a footballer, the Englishman represented Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough during his professional career before hanging up his boots in 2006.

Southgate took charge of Middlesbrough after entering the managerial world, and he showed some promising signs in his only job at the club level thus far. However, the 55-year-old became a household name during his spells with the different levels of the English national team, coaching the under-21 side and the senior team in the past decade.

The English tactician was with the Three Lions for eight years, taking them to two successive UEFA European Championships finals and the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finals. However, Southgate’s spell with England ended nearly two years ago, and a few clubs have shown interest in him since then.

What next?

Widespread reports have linked Gareth Southgate with Manchester United for a long time. However, the latest report has suggested that the Englishman is also a target for Crystal Palace, as the Eagles are scouring the managerial market for an interim replacement for Oliver Glasner.

The Austrian tactician has announced that he will leave Crystal Palace after the 2025/26 season. However, the pressure has soared on Glasner in recent weeks amid the South London outfit’s wretched run of form, with the 51-year-old compounding the woes with his latest comments. Southgate has thus emerged as a viable target for Crystal Palace, with the club working on a deal.

However, recent reports have claimed that the former England boss is not keen on returning to club management anytime soon. So, it will be interesting to see who replaces Glasner at Crystal Palace if the Eagles cannot convince Southgate to become their interim head coach.
