Torino have decided to go in a different direction for their bench, sacking Marco Baroni and hiring Roberto D’Aversa. The Granata have suffered five losses in the last seven matches, including the Coppa Italia, falling to 15th place. They have a six-point cushion over the bottom three.
According to Sky, the officials made the call following yet another large defeat against Genoa. An early red card wasn’t enough to justify it. Their only recent success came versus Lecce, then they shared the spoils with Fiorentina, which prevented them from plummeting in the standings. They have the worst defense in the league, having allowed 47 goals. The only highlight of their season was a fairly deep run in the domestic cup, knocking out Roma.
Baroni was chosen by Torino after he left Lazio last summer, while D’Aversa is coming off a relegation while helming Empoli. He has signed a short-term contract. He was linked to Pisa lately but preferred to wait.
The new manager had been fired in his previous spells at Parma, which he brought back to Serie A and helped avoid relegation for two years, Sampdoria, and Lecce.
The time was ticking after they changed their director, and they have been so up-and-down and leaky all year long. A few sides would be in trouble if Lecce and Fiorentina both started accelerating, including them. Their players had reacted in the previous instances when the gaffer had come under scrutiny, but not in the last round, which did him in. The hire isn’t inspiring, but the pool is what it is at this point. They have to land the plane now, and then think more ambitiously down the line.
