Wolfsburg sporting director Pirmin Schwegler evades questions about move to the bench

Wolfsburg sporting director Pirmin Schwegler has not yet addressed rumors of moving to the Wolfsburg bench, but did confirm the hiring of a new team sports psychologist on Tuesday. Schwegler revealed to reporters that Sinikka Heisler had been brought on board to help assist the team in its current relegation fight. The 32-year-old Heisler has worked with Wolfsburg before. She’s also worked with the German DFB.

Will Schwegler move to the Wolfsburg bench?

One considers this likely as it very much looks to be the case that Wolfsburg wishes to give current head coach Daniel Bauer more time. Bauer adopted a sensibly strident tone when speaking after his team’s latest Bundesliga loss. One assumes that VfL club management wishes to observe how the team reacts to Bauer’s call for more aggressive play.

Schwegler’s playing career enabled him to rack up plenty of Bundesliga experience. The now 38-year-old contested a total of 262 Bundesliga matches for Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, and Hannover 96. Schwegler has some post-career experience on the touchline in the Bayern Campus and at Frankfurt.

Is there any truth to the Felix Magath rumors?

One highly doubts that, as reported earlier today, Wolfsburg are interested in bringing back their former coach. Rumors linking Magath with a return to the Bundesliga sidelines are commonplace in the German tabloid press. Magath – currently working as an administrator at his hometown club Asschaffenburg – receives a phone call every time a Bundesliga head coaching vacancy crops up.

Most recently, Magath was linked with the Werder Bremen head coaching position. As always, Magath expressed great enthusiasm at potentially returning to coaching. As nearly always probes the case, Magath ended up not receiving a phone call from anyone besides a journalist. Few clubs remain interested in bringing in the 72-year-old, even on a short-term basis.

Schwegler’s statement on Heisler’s hiring

It had been in the works for quite some time,” Schwegler said of the hiring of the psychologist who once worked with Bauer at the VfL academy. “At the [professional] level we operate at, we believe it’s simply part of the job. The current situation wasn’t necessarily the deciding factor, because we had planned it anyway. We want to create opportunities for the lads, for the staff, for everyone.
