Harry Maguire closing in on signing new Manchester United contract

Harry Maguire and Manchester United are close to finding common ground on a new deal to extend the experienced defender’s stay at Old Trafford.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Harry Maguire is close to signing a new deal at Manchester United that would extend his stay beyond the current season. The experienced defender has found his form and his place in the team again over the last few weeks, with the club convinced by the idea of keeping him.

Harry Maguire’s long-term future has been a constant subject of debate over the last few years. Manchester United spent a world-record fee of around £80 million to sign him from Leicester City in 2019, and while he made important contributions early in his time at the club, the arrival of Erik ten Hag in 2022 saw his stature diminish.

The Dutch tactician took away the captain’s armband from Maguire and largely made him a rotational player, which has since fuelled speculation over his future in every transfer window. Even in January, there were heavy rumours of his immediate departure, especially considering the defender is in the final few months of his £180,000-a-week deal with the club.

However, the arrival of Michael Carrick in an interim role has coincided with Harry Maguire’s return to the starting lineup and, incidentally, Manchester United have performed exceedingly well. Even as his future at Old Trafford is still uncertain, West Ham United have shown interest in signing him.

A year ago, the prospect of leading the West Ham defence might have seemed appealing for a player like Maguire. At the moment, the Hammers are battling relegation. Hence, they will find it extremely difficult to lure the £180,000-a-week Manchester United star to the club. More importantly, the veteran English defender is now expected to sign a new deal.

New deal for Harry Maguire?

Manchester United are expected to agree a new deal with Maguire to extend his stay at Old Trafford, with a view to having an experienced head during a period of transition. The Englishman may have to take a pay cut from his current salary, which is something he is willing to find common ground on.

Manchester United players are also keen for Harry Maguire to stay beyond the current season, and all signs point towards a new deal for the veteran defender. In the process, teams like West Ham are set to suffer a blow in their attempts to lure in a player with a big reputation like Maguire.
