Wales vs Bosnia and Herzegovina: Preview and Prediction

A place in the World Cup playoff final will be on the line when Wales will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in a bid to take a giant step towards the summer tournament.

Wales head coach Craig Bellamy will be pumped to get his players galvanised for the big showdown with Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a place in the World Cup playoff final up for grabs. The winner of this clash will meet either Italy or Northern Ireland in the grand showdown for a place in the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The Red Dragons will be particularly disappointed with the way the group stages ended, as they narrowly missed out on automatic qualification, a spot that Belgium achieved. Bellamy’s men finished their campaign with a 7-1 thrashing of North Macedonia.

Wales are angling for consecutive appearances at the World Cup finals, having participated in Qatar 2022, where they bowed out at the group stages. Cardiff will play host to this huge clash, where Wales have won five of their last six international games, while this was also the venue that saw them win their playoff games against Austria and Ukraine on their way to Qatar 2022.

Meanwhile, Bosnia and Herzegovina will also come into this playoff round to win this clash and take a big step towards the main tournament. Sergej Barbarez’s side agonisingly missed out on an automatic spot, as they took on eventual group winners Austria in the final qualifier game back in November.

Haris Tabakovic’s early goal gave Bosnia a lead, which the team did well to keep until late in the game when Austrian forward Michael Gregoritsch secured an equaliser and the lead over Bosnia in the standings. The playoffs are a second chance for Barbarez’s men to take a giant step towards the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

However, the visitors must end their playoff hoodoo for major tournaments, having never won a game in seven attempts in four separate playoff campaigns since 2010, although only one was for the World Cup. One thing they can rely on is their away run, having not lost in a four-game span on the road across all competitions.

Team News & Tactics

Wales

Bellamy has called up the likes of Wrexham keeper Danny Ward, Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo, and full-back Rhys Norrington-Davies for this edition of the international break.

The Welsh boss is missing regular members like Ben Davies, Chris Mepham, Kieffer Moore, and Connor Roberts with injury issues, while Aaron Ramsey is an expected absentee, having not played competitive football since leaving Mexican side Pumas back in September 2025.

Bellamy does have some great options, with Premier League performers Harry Wilson and Brennan Johnson, as well as Leeds United quartet Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu, and Daniel James all set to feature from the start. Norrington-Davies will take up the left-back berth, while Nottingham Forest star Neco Williams will feature at right-back.

Bellamy will rely on a single pivot in his defensive midfield position with Ampadu playing there, while Jordan James and Josh Cullen will take the more advanced midfield roles. Wilson and Daniel James will feature out wide, with Johnson leading the line.

Probable Lineup (4-1-4-1): Darlow; Williams, Rodon, Cabango, Norrington-Davies; Ampadu; Wilson, Cullen, Jordan James, Dan James; Johnson

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia also had to make some changes, as Dennis Hadzikadunic was ruled out of this international break with an injury. Sergej Barbarez also called up uncapped goalkeeper Osman Hadzikic and defender Nidal Celik to the squad.

Midfielder Benjamin Tahirovic was caught up in a storm, as he allegedly called out his Brondby manager amid false accusations of dropping him intentionally ahead of the World Cup playoffs with Wales, with the midfielder in contention to start for Bosnia.

Barbarez will continue to deploy a 4-3-3 shape, with Tahirovic sitting at the base of the midfield, with Amir Hadziahmetovic and Armin Gigovic on either side. Amar Memic and Kerim Alajbegovic will start in attack, with 40-year-old Bosnia’s all-time record goalscorer Edin Dzeko leading the line.
Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Vasilj; Dedic, Katic, Muharemovic, Kolasinac; Hadziahmetovic, Tahirovic, Gigovic; Memic, Dzeko, Alajbegovic

Wales need a heroic performance as much as they need the team to gel and put in a collective display. Given how Wilson has performed for Fulham, more like a hero who has given them numerous wins or points with his single-handed contributions, he must now replicate that for his national side.

The Red Dragons are playing this playoff on home soil, which should give them a level of advantage, as Bellamy will want key stars like Wilson to perform at his best. The Fulham man will be one of the key threats to this Bosnian defence, as he will snatch at a half-chance if presented in the right conditions to punish the visitors.

Prediction

Wales 2-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina

This could be a tight game between these World Cup hopefuls, but Bosnia could enter this contest as the slight underdogs. The visitors have a good away record, but given the level at which this game is expected to be played and what is at stake, they may need a top-notch performance across the board.

With home comfort set to aid them in a big way, Wales are the slight favourites to clinch a win and play one of Northern Ireland or Italy later. Craig Bellamy’s side also have the quality to overcome this Bosnia side, as Wales are expected to nick a win by the narrowest of margins.
