Nico Schlotterbeck poised to sign new Borussia Dortmund deal

Liverpool and Real Madrid have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund defensive mainstay Nico Schlotterbeck.

According to an update by German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool and Real Madrid’s hopes of signing Nico Schlotterbeck are almost over as he is set to pen a new deal at Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga giants have agreed on everything with his camp, only the final approval of the player is missing.

The German international is set to sign a new deal until 2031, and he will now become the club’s highest-paid player. His contract will also include a significant release clause that will come into effect from 2027.

Nico Schlotterbeck has not only established himself as one of the mainstays at Borussia Dortmund since joining them from SC Freiburg, but he is also widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Germany.

Despite a few injury troubles, he has featured in 30 games this term and has racked up over 2,600 minutes of first-team action. The 26-year-old centre-back has even contributed towards six goals. While he prefers playing in the heart of the defence, he has also been deployed as a left-back at times.

Borissia Dortmund secure Schlotterbeck’s future

Nico Schlotterbeck’s future has been a massive talking point for months as his contract runs out in 2027. Borussia Dortmund were worried that he could push for a move away this summer. With only a year left on his deal, they would have had to listen to offers, as they could not risk losing him for free.

As a result, the Black and Yellows were working hard to secure his long-term future amidst interest from clubs like Liverpool and Real Madrid. With Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain and Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez’s contracts running out in 2027, the Reds were looking at Schlotterbeck as an interesting option to revamp their backline.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also had their eyes set on the Borussia Dortmund centre-back, with David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger’s future not certain. He could become one of the mainstays of their defence alongside Dean Huijsen.

While both clubs were ready to offer him lucrative deals, he looks set to continue at Signal Iduna Park. The Bundesliga giants have a full agreement in place with his camp, and only the player’s approval is missing, which should not be much of a problem.
