Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton vying for William Atherton

Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton are all vying to bring 15-year-old Carlisle goalkeeper prodigy William Atherton in this summer.

According to Football Insider, Carlisle’s 15-year-old goalkeeping prodigy William Atherton is attracting big interest from Premier League giants. Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City are all interested in bringing the young keeper in and developing his talents, as he has already rejected a contract offer at his current side.

A modern goalkeeper is steadily becoming the rarest of commodities in football, especially in the Premier League, where the demands are higher. Today’s stoppers are not merely custodians, but an equal part of the outfield, with some keepers revelling in their build-up ability as well as their work on the ball.

Many of the top teams still lack keepers of that kind who are complete in their profile, but teams are steadily heading towards developing talents of that sort. Now, the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton are vying for a common target in Carlisle’s 15-year-old prodigy, William Atherton.

Atherton could harbour big dreams for his future and could greenlight a move to one of the big Premier League sides. He has already rejected an offer from Carlisle, which has fuelled fresh speculation surrounding his future, as the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City are keeping close tabs.

Atherton could follow in the footsteps of James Trafford, who was scouted and secured by Manchester City from the National League. He has now become a big name in the top division despite his secondary status at the Etihad, and Atherton could dream of a big break of that sort for himself.

Why are Premier League teams interested in William Atherton?

There are many goalkeepers in the higher leagues of the English football pyramid, but the common interest from three top-flight teams in a National League youngster could signal something else. It could be a case of some terrific scouting reports from observers of the 15-year-old goalkeeping prodigy, as he could soon be making the move up to the top flight.

He could be brought in to be developed into the mould of a modern keeper that most teams desire. With the young star already rejecting a deal, the door will be opened for negotiations over a big career switch, as it remains to be seen where he joins next among those teams mentioned as suitors.
