Rennes’ Esteban Lepaul reveals top-scorer objective

Stade Rennais’ Esteban Lepaul (25) has set his sights on a prestigious individual prize, with the end of the Ligue 1 season fast-approaching.

Lepaul currently has 14 goals in Ligue 1. He is third in the goal ranking, behind Olympique de Marseille’s Mason Greenwood (15) and RC Strasbourg Alsace’s Joaquín Panichelli (16); no player in France’s top flight has scored more non-penalty goals this season.

Panichelli suffered an ACL injury during the international break and won’t be able to add to his tally. He has the Top Scoreur trophy in his sights, with just seven games remaining in the Ligue 1 season. “I want to finish top scorer,” he told RMC Sport.

The Rennes forward added, “I can’t hide it; it would be magnificent. People don’t realise how hard it is to score in Ligue 1.” However, as he told Get French Football News, he does not have his sights necessarily set on a France call-up.

“It isn’t something that I’m thinking about. I am fighting to reach the objectives that I set myself at the start of the season. I am on course to do what I want to do,” he said in early March, having netted in a 4-0 win over OGC Nice. The Breton club are currently seventh in Ligue 1 and in the mix to qualify for the European places.
