According to a report by Football Insider, Everton midfielder James Garner is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are keen on reinforcing their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder in the summer transfer window.
Several other high-profile clubs are also keen on signing the Englishman from Everton in the coming months. However, the Toffees are unfazed about Garner’s exit links, as they “have no intention of entertaining any offers for the 25-year-old ahead of next season”.
James Garner has been among the most reliable midfielders in the Premier League since joining Everton from Manchester United in September 2022. The 25-year-old spent his formative years with Manchester United, but he could not establish a foothold in the senior squad, even though he excelled in his loan spells with Watford and Nottingham Forest before Everton secured his services nearly four years ago.
The English midfielder has made considerable progress at Everton. Additionally, he has been a utility man due to his ability to play as a holding midfielder, a box-to-box midfielder, and a full-back. Garner has made over 100 appearances thus far for Everton, chipping in with five goals and ten assists. Meanwhile, his progress has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs, including Aston Villa.
Aston Villa’s interest in James Garner is somewhat baffling. However, the Villans have been scouring the market for a versatile midfielder, even though Youri Tielemans, Boubacar Kamara and Amadou Onana have been impressive in the middle of the park. However, John McGinn is on the wrong side of 30, and Ross Barkley has struggled with fitness issues in recent seasons.
Additionally, Kamara is recovering from a long-term knee injury, and it behoves Aston Villa to sign a midfielder who can not only cover for his absence but perhaps be a more reliable presence in the middle of the park. So, Garner is a viable target for Aston Villa, and the Englishman can hit the ground running at the West Midlands club.
However, Everton’s stance on the 25-year-old English midfielder’s future leaves Aston Villa in a spot of bother, and a summer move may not be on the cards. So, the Villans should keep their options open instead of putting all their eggs in the Garner basket.
