Coventry City hopeful of keeping Haji Wright amid West Ham United links

EFL Championship leaders Coventry City are reportedly optimistic about keeping 28-year-old USMNT international Haji Wright amid his links with West Ham United.

According to a report by Football Insider, Coventry City centre-forward Haji Wright is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window.

However, a summer deal for the Coventry City attacker may not materialise. The EFL Championship table-toppers are “very optimistic”  that they will keep the American striker at the Coventry Building Society Arena beyond the 2025/26 season, and Frank Lampard “has already made it clear to the club hierarchy that he wants to keep all of his key players” beyond the summer.

How has Haji Wright fared at Coventry City?

Haji Wright has established himself as one of the best strikers in the EFL Championship since joining Coventry City from Antalyaspor in August 2023. Born in Los Angeles, the 28-year-old has been a journeyman in his club career, representing clubs in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Turkiye before arriving in England.

Meanwhile, the USMNT international has been excellent in the 2025/26 season, scoring 17 goals and providing two assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. Meanwhile, Wright’s progress has stimulated the attention of several well-known clubs. West Ham United will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature this year.

London calling?

Haji Wright has been on West Ham United’s wishlist for a long time. The continued interest makes little sense, as the East London club signed two strikers in the winter transfer window, with Pablo and Valentin Castellanos arriving at the London Stadium earlier this year. Additionally, Callum Wilson is also in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

Nevertheless, several candidates, including Folarin Balogun, have emerged on West Ham United’s radar, with Wright also a target. However, the 28-year-old American attacker will unlikely join the East London outfit in the coming months, as Coventry City will attempt to keep him beyond the 2025/26 season.

Frank Lampard has no intention of parting ways with the pivotal players in his squad, and with Coventry City on the cusp of returning to the Premier League, a summer departure for Wright may not be on the cards. So, West Ham should look elsewhere for a new striker, although they should focus on bolstering their creative ranks and signing a centre-back.
