Michael Owen claims Arsenal should not sack Mikel Arteta even if they do not win the Premier League title

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is under a lot of pressure after his team’s 2-1 defeat against Manchester City in the Premier League this past weekend.

Arsenal were cruising towards the Premier League title, but Manchester City have closed the gap, and they could head to the top of the table if they manage to beat Burnley this week in the Premier League. There have been speculations that the Spanish manager could be shown the door if Arsenal fail to win the title this season.

Arteta has been backed heavily in recent years, but he has failed to deliver a major trophy at Arsenal. Naturally, there will be pressure on him to deliver trophies. The Arsenal manager has spent in excess of £900 million, including last summer.

Former Premier League striker Michael Owen has now revealed that Arsenal will need to be patient with the manager, even if he fails to deliver the league title this season. The Spaniard believes there has been plenty of progress at Arsenal under him, and they have reached back-to-back UEFA Champions League semifinals as well.

Michael Owen wants Arsenal to back Arteta

The former Liverpool, Manchester United striker said to , “No, Mikel is coming up against one of the greatest managers of all time and you are sitting second against him. Arsenal are improving all the time and challenging for the title year in year out. He is doing a great job and look at how close they’ve been over the years.

“In the Champions League Arsenal have now reached back to back Champions League semi-finals, which is no mean feat. They have the chance to reach the final and go one step further this year.

“This isn’t the time for any negativity at all. Arsenal can still win the League and Champions League. They have a very competitive squad, which will only continue to get stronger, so no, if they don’t win the League, then I don’t think he should be sacked.”

Arsenal have been on top of the Premier League table for 197 days, but they could lose that position soon. Even though other teams have failed to perform consistently, Arsenal have not been able to wrap up the title yet.

Arteta has a tremendous squad, and the Gunners have invested significantly. The club hierarchy is bound to be worried if the manager fails to deliver the season. It will be interesting to see if they decide to stick around with the Spaniard if things do not go according to plan.
