These Mediterranean rivals are used to competing together for the European places. As has often been the case in recent seasons, there is a lot riding on this game between Olympique de Marseille and OGC Nice. However, the latter are not competing for European football – at least not through their Ligue 1 finish – but for their own survival in the league. With four games remaining, Nice have a four-point buffer to AJ Auxerre in the relegation play-off. Claude Puel’s side will also look to atone for the 5-1 humbling at the Allianz Riviera back in the Autumn.
OM have their own objectives, too, and their loss to FC Lorient last weekend makes the situation all the more urgent. Now sixth, time is of the essence to make it back to the top four, ideally the top three. But with reports of riffs and disinterest within the Marseille dressing room, the conditions are not ripe for them to reach their objective, even if there is more than enough quality within the squad to do so.
