Francesco Farioli uninterested in Chelsea switch

FC Porto manager Francesco Farioli has ruled himself out of the race to become the next Chelsea head coach this summer.

According to a report by A Bola, as relayed by Sport Witness, FC Porto’s Francesco Farioli has been the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are combing the managerial market for their next head coach after sacking Liam Rosenior earlier this week. However, the 36-year-old has no interest in moving to Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2026/27 season, preferring stability at his current club.

Who is Francesco Farioli?

Francesco Farioli has established himself as one of the world’s best young managers in recent years. Born in Barga, he never played football professionally and instead pursued philosophy and sports science at the University of Florence. The youngster began his coaching career as a goalkeeping coach, working at Margine Coperta, Fortis Juventus, Lucchese, Aspire Academy, Benevento, and Sassuolo.

After Roberto De Zerbi’s departure from Sassuolo, Farioli entered management. He gained experience in Turkiye, first as an assistant at Alanyaspor before becoming head coach at Fatih Karagumruk. The 36-year-old returned to Alanyaspor in 2023 before rising to prominence during spells with OGC Nice and Ajax, where he developed his tactical identity.

Farioli’s stock has skyrocketed since joining FC Porto last summer. The Italian tactician has made an immediate impact at the Portuguese club, guiding them to the top of the Primeira Liga standings. These achievements have attracted attention from several high-profile clubs, particularly from the Premier League, with Chelsea among the prospective suitors.

Should Farioli join Chelsea?

Chelsea’s interest in Francesco Farioli makes sense. While the Blues search for a long-term replacement for Liam Rosenior, the FC Porto head coach possesses the tactical qualities to strengthen the West London club. Their managerial search may be widespread, yet Farioli stands out for his modern approach.

Farioli employs a possession-oriented style of play that suits contemporary football. This system emphasises meticulous build-up from the back to draw opponents forward, followed by quick vertical passing into attacking areas.

The 36-year-old also prioritises high-intensity pressing and numerical overloads in defensive transitions, tactical elements designed to transform teams lacking defensive solidity and susceptible to being flat. Chelsea have been outrun more than any team in the Premier League this season, making such an approach potentially transformative.

Nonetheless, with Farioli unwilling to abandon a settled project at FC Porto for the mess at Chelsea, the Premier League outfit must look elsewhere for their next manager. The Italian tactician’s stance is understandable, as Stamford Bridge has witnessed an uncomfortable carousel of managers in recent seasons. Meanwhile, Chelsea have several candidates on their shortlist, with recent reports linking the club with Antonio Conte as a potential appointment.
