Why Ibrahima Konaté’s Liverpool contract renewal is in jeopardy

Ibrahima Konaté (27) is expected to leave Liverpool FC as a free agent upon the expiry of the five-year contract he signed back in 2021, Sky Sports reported on Thursday. The France international centre-back is seemingly off to pastures new after both he and Liverpool failed to reach an agreement over a contract renewal.

Last month, Konaté himself said that there was a “big chance“ for him to extend his stay on Merseyside, but it seems the situation has now drastically changed. L’Equipe reports that Konaté’s contract renewal with Liverpool is definitely in jeopardy with people close to the Frenchman stating that negotiations have reached a dead end, and that no agreement will be reached.

The outlet understands that this situation stemmed from internal disagreements, in the backdrop of Liverpool’s disappointing season, regarding the structure and the amounts relative to Konaté’s contract. Meanwhile, rival clubs have entered into concrete negotiations with the Frenchman, so much so that the latter is pondering over the next move of his career.

L’Equipe adds that Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea will try to secure Konaté’s signing on a free. The France international, who will start France’s World Cup training camp, is expected to commit his future before flying out to the United States with Les Bleus.
