La Liga giants Atlético Madrid have on Saturday announced a long-awaited fresh addition to the club’s defensive ranks. The player to have put pen to paper on terms at the Metropolitano? Cristian Romero.
Stopper Romero has of course seen his name re-emerge as a prominent one in the headlines in Spain’s capital over the last couple of weeks.
After the Argentine made clear his desire for a new challenge this coming season, the likes of Inter Milan and Arsenal quickly expressed an interest in his signature.
In the end, though, it was fellow countryman Diego Simeone who pushed hardest to bring Romero in.
A fresh round of discussions between the respective boards at Atlético and Tottenham Hotspur therefore took place earlier this week. And as alluded to above, this meeting ultimately proved to be the decisive one in pushing a deal over the line.
As per a statement across Atléti’s website and social media platforms on Saturday:
‘Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the transfer of Cristian Gabriel ‘Cuti’ Romero, who has signed for our club until June 30, 2031.’
