Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence on Friday night as newly promoted Coventry City visit the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta has insisted that Arsenal are not defending their title, but attacking their title defence. It is an admirable attitude from a manager who guided the Gunners to their first Premier League title in 22 years. They begin the new campaign at home against newly promoted Coventry City.
Arsenal appear well prepared for the new season, as demonstrated by their impressive Community Shield victory over Manchester City. Riccardo Calafiori scored the opening goal within 25 seconds of kick-off, before Kai Havertz and Martin Ødegaard completed a 3-0 win. New signing Christos Tzolis also contributed two assists.
The Gunners have strengthened their squad during the transfer window, with Tzolis and Bruno Guimaraes joining the club. They also have an agreement in place with Aston Villa for Ezri Konsa, who is expected to provide much-needed cover for the injured William Saliba. Overall, Arsenal look ready to begin the new campaign, with Arteta eager to secure a winning start to their title defence.
In the opposite dugout, Frank Lampard will take charge of his Coventry City side following an impressive season in which they won the Championship and earned automatic promotion to the Premier League. It will be Lampard’s first Premier League match as a permanent manager since 2023, when he served as Chelsea’s interim boss.
However, Coventry and Lampard could hardly have been given a more difficult start to life back in the top flight than a trip to face the reigning champions. Any positive result at the Emirates would represent a major achievement, and Coventry could make a statement of intent if they manage to frustrate Arsenal in any way, regardless of how unlikely that may appear on paper.
The Community Shield victory may have offered a glimpse of Arteta’s likely starting line-up for the opening league game. The involvement of several key players at the World Cup disrupted Arsenal’s preparations for the new season. It was therefore surprising to see some of them feature from the bench in the Community Shield, although none are expected to start on Friday.
Those players include Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and the Spanish contingent, except David Raya. Saliba and Jurrien Timber are the injury-related absentees. Saliba is expected to miss several months with a back problem, while Timber could miss the opening few matches due to a groin issue that has troubled him since last season.
Arteta could therefore use the same back four that started against Manchester City, with Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel Magalhaes at centre-back, and Ben White and Calafiori in the full-back positions. He may also retain the same midfield trio of Myles Lewis-Skelly, Guimaraes and Odegaard, which could remain in place for the opening few games.
Arteta will want to give the likes of Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Saka as much time as possible to recover from their fitness issues, although all three could feature from the bench. Noni Madueke could start on the right wing, with Tzolis on the left and Havertz expected to lead the line.

Lampard has overseen a productive summer transfer window following Coventry’s return to the top flight. As many as eight new players have arrived to strengthen the squad, and the manager will now decide on his first starting line-up of the season.
The final pre-season fixture often acts as a precursor to selection decisions for the opening game. In Lampard’s case, he is widely expected to field a similar team to the one that recently featured against Monaco. Coventry will be without Luke Woolfenden and Haji Wright, with both players facing lengthy absences.
There could be competitive debuts for summer signings Caleb Yirenkyi, Loum Tchaouna and Aurele Amenda. The trio are expected to occupy positions in midfield, attack and defence, respectively. Lampard could rely on a three-man midfield of Frank Onyeka, Matt Grimes and Yirenkyi.
At the back, Amenda and Bobby Thomas could operate in central defence, with Milan van Ewijk and Jahnoah Markelo in the full-back roles. In attack, Ellis Simms is expected to lead the line, with Tchaouna on the right and Brandon Thomas-Asante on the left. This could be Coventry’s strongest possible line-up based on the availability of their squad.

Arsenal’s midfield has improved significantly following Guimaraes’ arrival, with Arteta focused on building considerable depth in central areas. In the Community Shield, Lewis-Skelly put any lingering rumours over his future to rest with an outstanding display against Manchester City. He is now expected to start Arsenal’s opening Premier League match.
The teenager has plenty to prove ahead of the new season, and another strong performance against Coventry would boost his confidence. His main objective will be to remain competitive in Arteta’s plans and demonstrate that he is ready to step in whenever required. Lewis-Skelly could receive several opportunities at the start of the campaign, and he must make the most of them, beginning against Coventry.
Coventry City face a difficult start to life after promotion and could hardly have been handed a tougher opening fixture. Lampard’s side enter the match as heavy underdogs, while Arteta will want his team to make a statement from the very first game.
