Pep Guardiola open to Manchester City return despite verdict on financial charges

Former Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is open to a return to the Etihad despite the verdict on financial charges.

Pep Guardiola would consider returning to Manchester City if the Premier League upholds its verdict in the club’s 114 financial charges case, according to Topskills Sports. The Spaniard is reportedly prepared to help City rebuild if they end up getting relegated, though any comeback would hinge on the outcome of the club’s appeal and the future of current manager Enzo Maresca.

Manchester City have already appealed the independent commission’s decision, having been found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought against them by the Premier League. The sanctions have not yet been decided, meaning the club remain hopeful they can overturn the verdict. There is therefore no immediate expectation of Guardiola returning to the Etihad Stadium.

Maresca is currently in charge of City and has made an excellent start to his tenure. The former Chelsea manager has guided the club to seven wins from their opening eight matches. As a result, Guardiola’s potential return would only become a serious possibility if City’s appeal fails, the club are relegated, and Maresca subsequently leaves his position.

A potential Guardiola return

Guardiola’s willingness to return would nevertheless represent a remarkable development given his history with the club. The Spaniard left City at the end of last season after a decade in charge.

During his time at the Etihad, he managed 593 matches and averaged 2.27 points per game, establishing himself as one of the most successful managers in the club’s history. He won six Premier League titles with City and also delivered their first Champions League triumph, alongside a long list of domestic and international honours.

A relegation would represent a huge challenge for City, potentially forcing major changes both on and off the pitch. Guardiola’s experience, knowledge of the club and record of success could position him as City’s leading candidate for a rebuild. However, that remains a distant possibility for now.

Manchester City’s priority is overturning the verdict through their appeal, while Maresca will continue leading a team that has made an impressive start to the season. For now, Maresca’s performance will determine whether any rebuild scenario, with Guardiola or otherwise, becomes necessary.
