Lyon’s Lois Openda suffers fibula break

Lois Openda (26) will miss several weeks of action, Olympique Lyonnais confirmed on Monday. It comes after the Belgian was forced off during Friday night’s game, against one of his former clubs, RC Lens.

In the press release, Lyon were highly critical of the refereeing performance and the lack of protection provided. The Belgian, against Lens, was the victim of several fouls, the last of which forced the Juventus loanee off. Openda has since undergone tests that have revealed a break in his fibula. Without giving a specific timeline on the Belgian’s return, OL said that he would be out at least until the next international break, which comes in mid-November.

It is a blow for Lyon. Paul Fonseca’s side once again have the objective of securing UEFA Champions League qualification, whilst they also have UEFA Europa League football to contend with in the coming weeks. Openda’s absence could provide more opportunities for Rémi Himbert, who has seen game time limited so far this season.
