According to a report by Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth, Ben Johnson is the subject of interest from Fulham. The Cottagers are scouring the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window. So, the versatile Ipswich Town full-back has emerged as a market opportunity after the Tractor Boys’ relegation from the Premier League.
Ben Johnson has made gradual progress since joining Ipswich Town in a Bosman move last summer. A native of London, the Englishman spent his formative years with West Ham United after joining the East London club’s academy as a seven-year-old in 2007. He progressed through the ranks at West Ham before breaking into the first-team squad.
However, a lack of regular first-team opportunities forced Johnson to leave West Ham as a free agent last summer. While the 25-year-old has not been an undisputed first-choice starter for Ipswich Town, he has seen more starts coming his way, having amassed over 1,500 minutes of game time across 26 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with one goal and three assists.
However, Johnson has become a market opportunity after Ipswich Town’s relegation from the Premier League. A swift return to the Premier League might be on the cards, with Fulham among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Fulham’s interest in Ben Johnson is understandable. The Cottagers are keen on bolstering their defensive unit in the summer transfer window by signing a right-back amid uncertainties around Kenny Tete’s long-term future. The Dutch full-back will likely depart from Craven Cottage as a free agent, compelling Fulham to seek a new right-back.
So, several candidates, including Kyle Walker-Peters, have emerged on Fulham’s radar. However, Johnson is also a viable target for the West London club, considering the Englishman’s extensive experience in the Premier League.
However, prising Johnson away from Ipswich Town might be a tall order, as Kieran McKenna views the 25-year-old versatile full-back as a crucial part of his plans for the 2025/26 season. In addition, Johnson has no relegation clause in his contract with Ipswich Town. So, the English defender will not come cheap, making Walker-Peters a more approachable target.
