“We’re going to…” – Deco confirms Barcelona plan for Nico Williams signing

It’s no secret that Barcelona want to sign a new winger this summer, and this has been made clear by sporting director Deco – he is the man in charge of the process, which looks to be progressing well at this stage.

Deco opens upon Nico Williams signing process

In the last couple of weeks, Barcelona have switched their top target for the position. Luis Diaz had been the desired one, but it is now Nico Williams. And on the matter, Deco gave an insight into what he has done, and what he still needs to do whilst being interviewed by La Vanguardia (via MD).

“Both Nico and other players have shown a desire to come. If Nico’s circumstances arise, then we are going to try.

“To sign a player, you have to follow the right steps. First you talk to his agent, then you talk about contractual situations and then you see if his club requires the clause or is open to negotiating. We have met with his agent to find out what the player wants and from there we will see if it is possible. The most important thing is that players like Nico or Luis Díaz and other names are players who want to come. They are good people, who are hungry and want to continue succeeding.”

Williams had rejected Barcelona, but he is now reportedly desperate to join. Personal terms have already been agreed, which makes his arrival all the more likely – especially considering that the club can afford to trigger his release clause.

Deco gives reasoning behind Barcelona desire to sign winger

Deco revealed why Barcelona are looking to sign a new winger, while he also dismissed any suggestions that Williams is being signed because of the relationships he has with other squad members.

“We need to strengthen that position. As wingers we only have Lamine and Raphinha, because Ferran is becoming more and more a striker. When we don’t have Lamine or Raphinha, the level of the team drops. The names to reinforce this position are based on price and quality.

“The fact that Nico and Lamine are friends is good. But this is not a club of friends. We come here to work and try to win. Then, if they get along well, all the better.”
