Manchester City had a very difficult 2024/25 season as they struggled to meet the lofty expectations. Pep Guardiola is now focused on revamping his squad and has already made significant changes to his squad over the last two transfer windows.
While the focus will be on adding more quality to their squad, they will also be parting ways with a few of their stars. With Ilkay Gundogan’s contract running out next summer, there is a lot of talk about his future. He could be one of the players who ends up leaving the club amidst interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray.
While Ilkay Gundogan is currently focused on doing his best for Manchester City at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the 34-year-old midfielder was recently asked about his future.
He said via , “I have one more year left on my contract and I’m very happy here – I think everybody knows that. I am enjoying my football. I still believe I have several years in me at the highest level by taking good care of myself. I’ve proven last season when I didn’t miss a game. I’m available, I’m fit, I want to play at the highest level for much longer.”
After winning it all with City, Ilkay Gundogan left the club in 2023 to join Barcelona. While he was keen on a new challenge, things did not really work out for him at the Catalan club. As a result, he returned to the Manchester-based outfit in a year’s time.
Last season, he was involved in a total of 50 matches across competitions and ended up contributing towards 10 goals. While he is not getting any younger, the German midfielder still has a lot of football left in him.
The former German international remains an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s team, but recent reports have linked him with a move away. While Gundogan is happy at the club, he could choose to try a new challenge in the final phase of his career. Galatasaray could certainly be an interesting option for him.
But, it does not really seem to be keen on leaving the Manchester-based club. Ilkay Gundogan is fully committed to their project. He wants to honour his contract at the club and is more than willing to stay for another season.
The 34-year-old feels he still has a lot of football left in him, and he did prove it last season. As things stand, he is expected to stay at City for another season. However, things could change in the coming weeks depending on City’s other transfer plans.
