Eintracht Frankfurt are in talks with Mario Götze over a contract extension beyond the summer. According to a report from Bild, a decision on the player’s future could be made in the next few weeks.
Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Frankfurt head coach Dino Toppmöller spoke in favour of Götze extending his contract. “Everyone knows how much respect I have for Mario and how much I enjoy working with him. Let’s see what the next few weeks bring,” he told reporters.
But Toppmöller remained tight-lipped on Götze’s situation. “Mario is in contact with Markus [Krösche], and so is the agency,” he said.
Speaking in September, Götze very much hinted of his desire to remain at the Hessen club beyond the summer: “If I could draw up my own contract, it wouldn’t end in the summer.”
With a reported base salary of €3.5m plus substantial bonuses, Bild note that the 33-year-old is one of Frankfurt’s highest earners, and a new contract would see a pay cut. Despite this, all signs are pointing towards a contract extension, with both Götze and Eintracht’s management sending ‘positive signals’ which indicate that a contract extension beyond the summer is likely, although it may be for just one year.
