Mathys Tel considering Tottenham loan exit this month

Mathys Tel is reportedly ready to explore a loan move away from Tottenham Hotspur in the winter transfer window to boost his chances of making France’s World Cup squad.

According to a report by BBC Sport, Mathys Tel is considering his future at Tottenham Hotspur. The former Bayern Munich attacking prospect has struggled for regular game time at the North London club, with Thomas Frank even excluding him from the UEFA Champions League squad before adding him as a replacement for Dominic Solanke.

The latest update has revealed that the Frenchman is ready to explore a loan move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the winter transfer window to boost his prospects of making France’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, recent reports have claimed that the Lilywhites have no interest in offloading Tel this month, despite his struggles for regular game time in the first half of the 2025/26 season.

How has Mathys Tel fared at Tottenham?

Mathys Tel has endured a dissatisfying journey since joining Tottenham Hotspur from Bayern Munich. Born in Sarcelles, the youngster spent most of his formative years in France and graduated from the youth division at Stade Rennais. However, the 20-year-old was unable to establish a foothold at Bayern Munich after moving to the Allianz Arena in July 2022.

Tottenham finally handed an escape route to Tel in February 2025, initially completing a loan deal before sealing a permanent move worth £30 million this past summer. However, the French attacker has yet to become a regular starter for Tottenham, managing only 685 minutes of game time in 19 outings thus far in the 2025/26 season while chipping in with three goals. Meanwhile, the youngster’s stock is high, as recent reports have linked him with AS Roma.

Serie A move on the horizon?

AS Roma’s interest in Mathys Tel is understandable. The Serie A title hopefuls are combing the market for a productive and versatile attacker heading into the winter transfer window, as they have slipped up in the last few weeks. Additionally, Leon Bailey has returned to Aston Villa after a dreadful loan stint with the Giallorossi.

With Artem Dovbyk struggling to make his mark this season, Tel can arrive as a replacement for the Ukrainian international amid the former Girona striker’s exit links. While the report by BBC Sport has not mentioned AS Roma as a prospective suitor, it has suggested that the Frenchman is keen on exploring a loan exit to bolster his prospects of making France’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, recent reports have revealed that Tel is unhappy at the North London club amid his lack of game time. So, a loan exit may benefit the 20-year-old French attacker, and it will be interesting to see if he or AS Roma can convince Tottenham to do so.
