Liverpool, Newcastle United vying for Luis Suarez

Liverpool and Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Sporting CP’s prolific goalscorer, Luis Suarez, as a new striker option.

According to Sports Boom, Sporting CP star Luis Suarez has emerged as a potential striker target for Liverpool and Newcastle United ahead of the summer. The Premier League duo are reportedly eager to reinforce their frontlines, with the Colombian valued at around €60 million.

Sporting CP took their time before finalising the sale of former striker Viktor Gyökeres to Arsenal last summer. They signed Luis Suarez before allowing the Swedish forward to depart, and the arrival of the Colombian has proved a major success in Lisbon.

Suarez has wasted no time in establishing himself as Sporting CP’s leading goalscorer, netting 27 times across all competitions this season. His performances have already begun to attract interest from some of England’s biggest clubs, with Liverpool and Newcastle United both linked with the Colombian.

Sporting CP will reportedly demand at least €60 million to sell the 28-year-old in the summer, which may seem reasonable given how prolific he has been in Portugal. However, he might not be guaranteed a prominent role at either club, as Liverpool and Newcastle may only view him as a rotational option—casting doubt on their willingness to pay as much for the €60 million-rated South American striker.

Suarez is believed to be open to the idea of leaving Sporting if it means securing a big move to one of Europe’s top clubs, particularly in England. Liverpool were keen to sign a new striker following Alexander Isak’s injury, and while the report claims they might be ready to cut their losses on the Swede, that assertion appears wide of the mark.

Luis Suarez to the Premier League?

Liverpool reportedly views the €60 million-rated South American forward as a rotational option within their squad, which could still appeal to Suarez. However, Sporting CP’s asking price may prove problematic for the Reds, who might be reluctant to invest that heavily.

The situation at Newcastle United could be slightly different, with rumours suggesting Nick Woltemade is considering an exit amid interest from Bundesliga clubs. Eddie Howe wants to keep the German, but in reality, neither Woltemade nor Yoane Wissa—two of their big-money striker signings last summer—have managed to hit the ground running.

As a result, they might turn to someone like Suarez to fill the goalscoring void in their team next season, which could even see Newcastle entertaining offers for Wissa. Whether they are willing to invest heavily in the Colombian forward remains to be seen, but at this stage, it appears unlikely.
