Liverpool prioritising centre-back move for summer window

Liverpool are reportedly hoping to sign a top-class central defender in the summer transfer window despite landing Jeremy Jacquet.

It is no secret that Liverpool have been quite vulnerable at the back this season, and they are likely to lose a couple of players in the summer. According to a report by Football Insider, Ibrahima Konate will be out of contract in the summer, and he has not yet signed a new deal with the club.

In addition, Joe Gomez may leave the club amid his relentless links with AC Milan. The Englishman has struggled to secure regular opportunities at the Premier League club, and he has recently been linked with top clubs. It will be interesting to see if anyone is willing to come forward and provide him with an exit route in the coming months.

Liverpool have already signed Jeremy Jacquet, who will join up with the club in the summer transfer window. However, the Frenchman is recovering from a long-term injury and is unlikely to be available at the start of the next season.

Liverpool need more depth in the defensive unit. Giovanni Leoni is also currently sidelined with a long-term knee injury, and there is no guarantee he will be back playing at the top level towards the start of next season.

Liverpool need to improve defensively

It will be interesting to see if Liverpool can find a quality central defender in the summer. The Reds will have to tighten up defensively if they want to fight for major trophies again. This has been a disastrous season for them, and they could easily miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification.

The Merseyside outfit have struggled at both ends of the pitch. They will need to address the team’s weaknesses if they want to bounce back strongly. Apart from a quality central defender, they should also invest in a right-back and a left-back.

Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have had multiple injury problems, and Liverpool have had to field makeshift options in the right back department. As far as the left-back situation is concerned, Andrew Robertson is expected to leave the club at the end of the season. The Scottish international needs to play regularly, and Liverpool will not be able to provide him with that opportunity.
