‘I’m going there to play as much as possible’ – Jérémy Jacquet previews start to life at Liverpool

Future Liverpool centre-back Jérémy Jacquet (20) has opened up on his ambitions ahead of his €72m transfer to Arne Slot’s Reds. In a wide-ranging interview to Ouest-France, the Stade Rennais Academy graduate is adamant that the time was ripe for him to embark on the next step of his promising career, citing a conversation with his agent. “I told him: if the biggest clubs in Europe are interested, we’re not going to turn them down. They’re there for a reason.

With Liverpool qualified for the Champions League group stage courtesy of their fifth-place finish in the Premier League, there shouldn’t be any shortage of high-level games for Jacquet to feature in. Jacquet is expected to rejuvenate the Reds’ backline with Van Dijk turning 35 in July and Ibrahima Konaté’s future on Merseyside still uncertain – although Jacquet has hinted at a possible contract extension.

Nevertheless, Jacquet backs himself to showcase the qualities that made Liverpool break Rennes’ transfer record. “I know my potential. I want to play my football and enjoy the moment. I’m going to follow my own path; I don’t know how it will end, but I think I’m off to a good start. I have no doubt that things will go well.

The France U21 international intends to “play as much as possible” for Liverpool. He also rebuffed the idea of having joined Liverpool over guarantees regarding playing time. “For me, a player shouldn’t need that. He has to prove himself on the pitch.”
