AS Saint-Étienne are set to appoint Scottishman Ian Cathro as their new manager, as per a report from L’Équipe.
Saint-Étienne opted against extending Philippe Montanier’s contract at the end of the season. This came following the club’s failure to secure promotion back to Ligue 1, despite succeeding in retaining their key players at the start of the campaign.
Cathro, who managed Hearts and who has also had roles as the assistant manager at Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Valencia, has managed Portuguese side Estoril since July 2024.
The Scot led them to an eighth and a tenth place finish in his two seasons. After days of negotiations, a deal has been reached with Estoril to buy Cathro out of the last two years of his contract.
With a deal agreed, his arrival at Saint-Étienne is now imminent, L’Équipe understands. He is set to sign a two-year deal with the Ligue 2 club.
