Utrecht have announced that 32-year-old central midfielder Joris van Overeem has returned to the club from SC Heerenveen. The former AZ Alkmaar and Dutch youth international has signed a contract with the club from the cathedral city until 2028 and leaves SC Heerenveen after just one season.
Van Overeem began his career with AZ Alkmaar, making his debut for the club during the 2013/2014 season. The following year he was loaned out toe FC Dordrecht, before returning to play a over 100 games for AZ Alkmaar, scoring 13 goals. In the summer of 2018 he joined Utrecht and played there for three seasons, with six goals in 116 games. In the summer of 2022 he left for Israel and spent a few seasons with Macabi Tel Aviv before returning to the Eredivisie with Heervenveen last summer. Van Overeem returns to Utrecht having played 38 games for his now former club, scoring twice.
Van Overeem is just the latest player to sign for Utrecht, who have been one of the more active sides in the transfer market this summer. The side also have a new coach for the 2026/2027 season, with former Telstar man Anthony Correia having replaced Ron Jans.
