HLN is reporting that Union St Gilloise striker Mohammed Fuseini is set for a move to Birmingham City. The Ghanaian forward was not in the squad for the sides victory in the Brussels derby against Anderlecht. The deal is set to be a loan with an option to buy for Birmingham City. Fuseini only joined Union St Gilloise two seasons ago, and has not quite hit the heights during his time here.
Fuseini joined Union the same season as Promise David, who has since left the club to join Brighton for a substantial fee. Yet when the transfers were made, it was Fuseini who, on paper at least, looked to be the more likely to have a big move. After nine goals in just 16 games for Randers the previous season, it looked like Fuseini had discovered something, and Union have always been great at taking players like Fuseini and turning them into the likes of Denniz Undav.
Yet, while Fuseini did score 11 goals in 44 games, it was David who stole the show. The Canadian forward, signed from Estonian football, proved to be the difference maker as Union won the league. Fuseini has since struggled with injury and consistency. Last season he only scored three goals in 27 games. So far this season he has already played five games, scoring once and providing two assists.
Age is certainly on his side. The 24-year-old could thrive for Birmingham City, yet so many players who have swapped Belgium for England have struggled to make the mark. And many of those strikers had been prolific in Belgian football, something Fuseini certainly hasn’t been. With the deal being a loan with a purchase option, the onous is now on Fuseini to prove to Birminghan City’s staff and fans that he is worth investing in. That may well get the best out of him, as it was a loan move from Sturm Graz to Randers in 2024 that earned him a move to Union St Gilloise.
For Birmingham City, they have already signed one striker who struggled to have a big impact on Belgian football in Luis Vazquez, who is yet to score in his five appearances for the side. They are now adding another in Mohammed Fuseini.
