Morocco look to have forced Belgium’s hand in deciding whether or not they want to include Adnane Abid as part of their international future. The Atlas Lions have included the talented Standard Liege winger in their pre-selection for the upcoming AFCON qualifiers. As reported by Sudinfo, the Belgian FA have also now reached out to Abid in an attempt to persuade him to go with Belgium over Morocco. In the past few seasons, it has been Morocco who have been more successful in convincing those eligible to represent the two countries to go with them. The Red Devils have missed out on Bilal El Khanouss and Chemsdine Talbi in the past few years.
Abid has enjoyed a strong start to the season with Standard Liege, and at the age of 23 he could get even better. It is not surprising that Morocco have looked to bring him into their set-up, although it also questions why Belgium have allowed Morocco to force their hand if they had been interested in him forming part of a future Red Devils squad. Abid had represented Belgium in the past at U19 level but that was back in 2021.
In the summer of 2025, Abid left second tier side Patro Eisden to join Standard Liege. In 35 games last season he scored two goals and provided five assists. This season has gone much better for the winger, who has scored four goals and provided two assists in 10 games for Standard.
