Newcastle have already secured the signing of a Spanish talent for this summer, and they have now set their sights on another – and this time, it is Joan Garcia that has taken the fancy of the Premier League side.
Last month, it was widely reported that Newcastle reached a pre-contract agreement with Antonio Cordero, who will leave Malaga at the end of the season in order to make the move to England. On that occason, the Magpies bested Barcelona and Real Madrid to sign the teenager, and they are looking to take La Liga’s big two on again with their latest pursuit.
That’s because Angel Garcia (via MD), has reported that Newcastle have set their sights on a summer move for Espanyol goalkeeper Garcia. The 24-year-old has been a sensation in La Liga this season, having singled-handedly won points for the Catalans on numerous occasions.
Barcelona have identified Garcia as a leading target for their goalkeeper position, although it has yet to be determined whether they will try to do a deal. Real Madrid have also lined him up as an Andriy Lunin replacement, while there has also been interest shown from the likes of Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite the fact that the competition will make things tough, Newcastle would have an advantage in the race to sign Garcia. If he were to make the move to St James’ Park, he would be the starting goalkeeper, which is not guaranteed at any of the aforementioned clubs. And because he is keen to continue playing regular football, he is sure to prioritise a move where he arrives as number one.
It remains to be seen where Garcia ends up by the end of the summer. At this stage, it is unlikely to be Espanyol, who need to raise funds in order to ease their financial woes.
