According to Graeme Bailey via TBR Football, Liverpool might not be able to acquire the services of Morgan Rogers this summer. While the Reds are very keen on signing the Aston Villa star, he could choose to continue at the Birmingham-based club with the World Cup coming up next summer.
Things did not work out for Rogers at West Bromwich Albion as well as Manchester City. However, his impressive performances for Middlesbrough put him on the radar of Aston Villa, who acquired his services at the start of 2024. The 22-year-old has not looked back since joining Unai Emery’s team.
The Englishman has enjoyed an impressive rise, and he has become one of their mainstays in no time. In the ongoing season, the youngster has featured in a total of 53 matches, while contributing towards 29 goals (14 goals, 15 assists).
The English international has been one of their standout performers in the Premier League as well as the UEFA Champions League, and his work has not gone unnoticed. While Rogers prefers playing as a ten, he is equally effective on the flanks and can even chip in as a number nine.
His performances have put him on the radar of Liverpool, who are looking at ways to further bolster their attack. Arne Slot would absolutely love to have a player like Rogers, who can be the creative force in the middle and can even feature out wide on either flank when needed. He could help them take the next step.
While the Reds are quite serious about their pursuit, Bailey feels Rogers could turn down the opportunity to join the Merseyside club this summer. The 22-year-old could prefer staying at Villa as it will give him the best chance of making it to the next World Cup.
While speaking to TBR, the transfer expert said: “Liverpool love Morgan Rogers, there’s no getting away from that. But it’s highly unlikely that Rogers leaves for more than one reason. With a lot of these players, the feedback I’m getting from the players’ camps is that they are very mindful that we’re in a World Cup cycle now.”
“So someone like Rogers…if he leaves now, if he goes to Liverpool for instance, then playing devil’s advocate and it doesn’t work out, he’s not going to the World Cup. But if he stays with Emery for the next 12 months, he’s going to go. Of course he is. So I don’t think we’ll see Morgan Rogers leave. Not just because it’ll cost £100 million, which it would because a deal would be similar to Jack Grealish-type level, but it’s a World Cup year.”
While Rogers is certainly ready to make the jump to a bigger club, he is aware of the fact that things might not work in his favour at Anfield. As a result, the English international does not really want to risk missing out on the next World Cup by making a move away this summer.
He might choose to continue at the Birmingham-based club for now but eventually, the 22-year-old Englishman will join a bigger club. With his contract running until 2030, Villa will look for over £100 million, which could be another major hurdle for the Reds if they choose to make a move this summer.
