According to a report from Give Me Sport, Tottenham have shifted their focus towards signing Lyon attacking sensation Rayan Cherki. While they have a long-standing interest in Eberechi Eze, the North London club are not certain that they can afford to sign him. As a result, they are looking at Cherki, who could be a more cost-effective option for them.
Spurs brought an end to their long wait for a major silverware last night as they defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final. This win could go a long way in saving Ange Postecoglou’s job and more importantly, it has helped Tottenham secure a place in the Champions League after a disastrous season where they are 17th in the Premier League.
With Champions League football to offer, Spurs certainly have a much better position heading into the market as they look to add more quality to their squad. The North London club want more creativity in the final third. They want someone who can challenge James Maddison for a place in the XI and could also chip in on the flanks when needed.
Eberechi Eze and Rayan Cherki are two names that are quite high on Spurs’ radar as they look to bolster their attack. The Crystal Palace sensation has been on their wishlist for a long time. Tottenham wanted to sign him last summer as well, but things did not go according to plan.
While the North Londoners are keen on adding the FA Cup winner to their squad, they are facing frustration in their pursuit as there is an internal feeling that they cannot afford to get a deal over the line. Tottenham might not be able to stump up the cash required even though they do know what needs to be done to strike a deal with the Eagles.
The English international is protected by a £68 million release clause, which will be active again when the transfer window reopens. Crystal Palace will only let him leave if the clause is paid in full. While Spurs are aware of it, they might be able to afford such a deal.
With Eberechi Eze unavailable, Spurs are looking at Rayan Cherki, who has a similar profile but could prove to be a much cheaper option. Lyon have already confirmed that he will be leaving the club in the summer, which certainly is a boost for Tottenham.
With Cherki set to be available, Spurs have already started making moves. They have held initial talks with the French sensation’s representatives to understand more about a potential transfer this summer. Since they have Champions League football to offer, they can certainly try to convince him to move to North London. But it won’t be that straightforward as other top clubs who want to sign him.
