Arsenal will struggle to sign Anthony Gordon if Newcastle United qualify for the Champions League

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.

Arsenal are keen on adding more firepower to their attack. While their top priority is to sign a new world-class striker, the Gunners are also working hard to bring in a new left-winger. Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon is one of the names on their wishlist but they are not going to find it easy to secure his services.

According to Pete O’Rourke via Football Insider, Mikel Arteta’s team will struggle to sign the English international if Newcastle United manage to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League. He is a key figure in Eddie Howe’s team and he certainly doesn’t want to lose out on him.

Gordon made a name for himself at Everton and on the back of his performances, he earned a move to Newcastle at the start of 2023. He has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Magpies and has been a regular feature for them under Howe.

In the ongoing season, he has been involved in a total of 41 matches and has contributed towards 16 goals. While he hasn’t been as prolific as he was last season, the 24-year-old has still done a decent job throughout the campaign.

His performances have put him on the radar of quite a few top clubs but Eddie Howe has no intentions of parting ways with him. The Newcastle manager considers him a key part of his plans and they are not going to entertain bids for him.

Arsenal are keen on signing Gordon

Arsenal have emerged as a potential destination for the 24-year-old. The Gunners want a new left-winger as they look for an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and Gordon is quite high on Arteta’s shortlist.

Since it’s a top priority for the Spanish manager, the North London club are working on a deal to sign the Newcastle star. But they are unlikely to secure his services.

While speaking on Inside Track, O’Rourke said: “[Gordon] is obviously another player who is on that list of Arsenal targets to play as a wide forward – bringing in a new wide man is a priority for Mikel Arteta”,

“Newcastle are not really entertaining losing any of their best players right now.

“They want to build on what they’ve achieved this season, and if they can qualify for the Champions League, that’ll go a long way to keeping their top players.”

Arsenal are unlikely to sign Gordon

While the Gunners want Gordon, Newcastle do not want to lose out on any of their top players. They have made significant progress this season and want to build on it. The Tyneside club are not going to entertain any offers for the young English winger.

Meanwhile, O’Rourke has made it clear that qualifying for the Champions League could go a long way in helping them keep hold of their best players. While the defeat to Arsenal in their last league outing has complicated things, the Magpies are fourth and all three points against Everton will ensure their participation in the UCL.

With Newcastle likely to qualify for Europe’s biggest club competition, Arsenal might have to look at other targets to bolster their left flank ahead of next season.
