Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen in four-way battle for Nayef Aguerd

Bayer Leverkusen and Marseille are reportedly interested in signing 51-cap Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd from West Ham United in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by French outlet Foot Mercato, Nayef Aguerd is a target for four clubs from around Europe heading into the summer transfer window. The 29-year-old defender is keen on embarking on a new adventure after failing to make his mark at West Ham United, having spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Real Sociedad.

La Real will attempt to bring the Kenitra native back to the Reale Arena in the summer transfer window. However, the Basque outfit will face stiff competition from fellow La Liga club Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen for Aguerd’s signature. In addition, Marseille will aim to sign him from West Ham United, having presented a contract offer to him.

Nayef Aguerd and his West Ham woes

Nayef Aguerd has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining West Ham United from Stade Rennais in July 2022. The 29-year-old showed flashes of brilliance in his first two seasons with the East London club but could not establish himself as an undisputed first-choice starter under David Moyes. West Ham loaned him to Real Sociedad last summer, and the spell was a success.

The 51-cap Moroccan international was impressive during his loan spell with Real Sociedad, amassing nearly 3,000 minutes of game time across 36 appearances in all competitions. While the stint has ended, La Real will attempt to re-sign him this summer, although they face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and Marseille for his signature.

A man in demand

Bayer Leverkusen’s interest in Nayef Aguerd is understandable. The Bundesliga giants have lost Jonathan Tah as a free agent, with the German international on the verge of joining Bayer Munich in a Bosman move. So, Bayer Leverkusen must sign a replacement, with Aguerd emerging as a viable target.

As for Marseille, the Ligue 1 giants are preparing to embark on a campaign in the UEFA Champions League. So, they have already beaten stiff competition to sign Angel Gomes. Aguerd has also emerged as a viable target for Marseille, with the Ligue 1 outfit submitting a contract offer to him.

However, Marseille and Bayer Leverkusen face stiff competition from La Liga clubs Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad for the 29-year-old West Ham outcast’s signature. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the 51-cap Moroccan international, who wants to leave West Ham this summer.
