According to a report by Diario de Sevilla, as relayed by Sport Witness, Johnny Cardoso is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites have a preferential option to sign the American midfielder from La Liga club Real Betis in a deal worth €25 million in the summer transfer window.
However, the USMNT international does not want to join Tottenham and prefers moving across La Liga to Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window. However, Los Rojiblancos need to fork out €40 million to sign Cardoso from Real Betis, having recently presented an opening bid worth €30 million.
Johnny Cardoso has come leaps and bounds since joining Real Betis from Internacional in January 2024. The Denville native spent his formative years in Brazil and graduated from the youth division at Internacional. However, the youngster did not take long to make his mark in La Liga, having hit the ground running at Real Betis.
The 23-year-old has turned out over 50 times thus far for Real Betis while chipping in with five goals and three assists. Meanwhile, Cardoso’s progress at the Andalusian club has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid have been among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur secured a preferential option to sign the American midfielder for around €25 million when they sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis. The Lilywhites have been ready to trigger that clause in the last few weeks. The North London club’s interest is understandable, considering Yves Bissouma faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
However, the young midfielder does not want to join Tottenham in the summer transfer window. Instead, he is keen on moving across La Liga by signing with Atletico Madrid. The Rojiblancos have submitted a bid worth €30 million to sign the Real Betis midfielder. However, the Andalusian giants want around €40 million to part ways with him.
Cardoso’s stance suits Real Betis, considering Los Verdiblancos can recoup more from his move to Atletico Madrid after slapping a price tag of €40 million on him. So, it will be interesting to see how the situation evolves in the coming weeks.
