Chelsea are keen on reinforcing their attack and they have their eyes set on Jamie Gittens. The Blues were working hard to secure his services during the pre-Club World Cup transfer window but failed to strike a deal with Borussia Dortmund before the deadline.
Gittens’ move to Stamford Bridge has collapsed for now but the London club are expected to return for his signature when the transfer window reopens. They have received a significant boost in their pursuit as Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl suggested that there could be further talks with the Blues in the future.
While speaking to the media, Kehl initially informed them about Gittens’ failed move to Chelsea.
He said via : “We spoke on the phone, but ultimately we couldn’t reach an agreement because we have different ideas about the player’s current value,”
With Jadon Sancho returning to his parent club, Joao Felix likely to be sold and Mykhailo Mudry serving a ban, Maresca is keen on adding more quality on the flanks. They consider Gittens an ideal fit for their project as well as the Italian manager’s system.
Having had him in their youth setup back in the day, Chelsea are pushing to re-sign him. They wanted to take him to the Club World Cup and already had an agreement on personal terms. However, they failed to strike a deal with Dortmund despite having made three attempts.
Their third bid was reportedly worth €55 million but it was still not good enough as Dortmund value him at around €65 million. While the move has collapsed for now, the Blues are expected to return for him and Kehl did acknowledge the fact that sooner or later Gittens will be sold.
He said: “At a certain point, when you add a player, you obviously have to sell,”
The 20-year-old is now set to feature for the German giants at the month-long Club World Cup that starts on June 14th. Kehl is hoping his market value stays intact heading into the future.
“I assume his market value won’t drop,” the Dortmund sporting director added.
Both clubs will once again hold further talks about it when they sit to discuss the future of Carney Chukwuemeka, who is on loan at Dortmund. His deal ends on June 30 and Dortmund are hoping he stays until the end of the global tournament.
Kehl stated: “We’ll see to what extent we can keep him until the end of the tournament. There will be further discussions then,”
Talks between the two clubs regarding Gittens’ future might have stalled for now but they are expected to resume when the two teams meet again to discuss Chukwuemeka’s future.
