Real Madrid could step up interest in Ibrahima Konate

Real Madrid are reportedly keen to ramp up their efforts to land Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool could face an unwanted test of resolve this summer, as Real Madrid and PSG are reportedly circling French centre-back Ibrahima Konate following a contract impasse. However, those hoping the Reds will roll over again after the Trent Alexander-Arnold saga may be in for a rude awakening.

Konate has become a key cog in the heart of Liverpool’s defence since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021. His blend of physical dominance, recovery pace, and ball-playing ability made him an instant fan favourite, and he remains one of the most promising defenders in Europe. But with only a year left on his current deal, contract talks have hit a frustrating standstill.

The 26-year-old is demanding £200,000-a-week wages, a significant leap from his current wages, and Liverpool, known for their structured wage model, are hesitant to hand out that figure without performance incentives. It is a system that has served the club well in the past, fostering meritocracy and avoiding dressing room imbalances. Konate, however, appears unsatisfied with a deal heavily weighted on bonuses.

Cue the interest from Europe’s elite. According to Caught Offside, sources close to the Frenchman have confirmed Real Madrid and PSG are monitoring the situation closely, with Los Blancos reportedly eyeing a bargain move around the £25 million mark. Liverpool, however, are not eager to entertain such undervalued offers for a player still in his prime.

The Reds may have lost Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid under controversial circumstances, but this time, they hold the cards. Selling Konate, who has developed into a defensive leader alongside Virgil van Dijk, would send the wrong message in what is meant to be a new era under Arne Slot. While no player is bigger than the club, Liverpool will not be pressured into offloading talent cheaply, especially to direct European rivals.

Should an exit become unavoidable, Liverpool already have contingency plans in place. Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has emerged as a primary alternative, with his profile ticking many of the boxes that made Konate such an effective signing. Still, the Reds’ preference remains clear: keeping Konate and building the next great Liverpool backline around him.

Liverpool should not be bullied into a low-ball deal. Konate still has a lot to offer, and while £200,000-a-week wages will be steep, the club must find a balanced compromise if they truly value his contribution. Real Madrid can test the waters, but this is not the Liverpool of old. If Konate walks, it will be on Liverpool’s terms, not theirs.
