Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham rival Newcastle United in Giorgio Scalvini chase

Newcastle United have plenty of competition from Premier League rivals this summer in pursuit of Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini.

According to Caught Offside, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are all seen as Newcastle United’s rivals in the pursuit of Giorgio Scalvini. The Atalanta defender could be a big defender on the move this summer, with the Magpies currently being named as the front runners, but the direction of travel might change depending on offers that come in for the Italian international.

Giorgio Scalvini made headlines last season as he returned from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury only 170 days after suffering from the problem. He only missed 17 games with the knee issue, but then a shoulder injury ensured he missed the remainder of the campaign, while playing only six times in Serie A last season.

As Scalvini is expected to make his return, the defender might be playing in a different team as Atalanta could potentially sell him for an offer that exceeds €60 million. The Bergamo side are aware of the growing interest in the defender, as a host of Premier League sides are vying to sign the centre-back.

Given how Atalanta play with a back-three, Manchester United are naturally interested. However, the club are focused on reinforcing their attacking setup this summer, and might still make a move for a defender if the conditions are right after important signings are made.

Tottenham are also interested, as the club could allow Cristian Romero to leave this summer. Spurs will need to sign a replacement for the Argentine, and hence, they might consider a move for the €60m-rated Italian international from Atalanta as a potential option.

Newcastle United favourites for Giorgio Scalvini?

Chelsea are also keen, as the 21-year-old certainly fits their mould of a player they seek in the market. There are rumours of a potential exit for Trevoh Chalobah, which might necessitate the idea of signing Scalvini as a replacement. All of those teams like Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United are likely behind Newcastle United, who may have already failed with an approach for the defender.

The Magpies are expected to make an offer in the coming period, as they view Scalvini as a priority signing for their defence, which may lack numbers. Newcastle United will be aware of the growing interest from Premier League rivals, and they will want a deal in place for the €60m-rated Italian international.
