According to Mick Brown via Football Insider, Nico Gonzalez could end up parting ways with Manchester City this summer as his agents are already in talks with a number of clubs. Pep Guardiola has already given the green light to his departure as he looks to trim down his squad and make room for new signings.
While speaking to Football Insider, the former Manchester United scout said: “Man City are inviting offers for Nico Gonzalez,”
“It’s a classic case of what I always warn against, they rushed to bring him in during the January window because they needed to plug a gap.
“Six months later, they’re looking to let him go because he’s not quite been what they expected.
“Whatever the reason for that is, it’s something clubs have got to be more careful of.
“Guardiola has made no secret of the fact he wants to cut down his squad this summer, and that in large part is due to how many they’re bringing in.
“They’ve already bought a new player in Gonzalez’s position, now it’s time to make the space.
“From what I hear, City have been testing the waters to find a buyer for him.
“His agent has been speaking to club to drum up the interest, and by all accounts it’s something all parties are working on doing.
“It’s an interesting one after just six months at the club, but they seem to have made their decision.”
Gonzalez came up the ranks at La Masia. While things didn’t work out for him at Barcelona, he made the move to FC Porto in 2023 in search of regular first-team minutes. On the back of his performances, City secured his services at the start of the year.
Guardiola’s team rushed into the transfer, and six months down the line, they are now ready to sell him as he hasn’t been able to live up to the expectations. While he did score two goals in his 17 outings for the Premier League giants, his overall performance didn’t impress the Spanish manager.
They have already added a new midfielder in his position and could end up signing another one before the end of the window. As a result, they are looking to offload the 23-year-old to make room for potential signings. The Spanish manager has already given the green light as he is pushing to trim down his squad before the start of the new season.
His agents have been in contact with a number of clubs as they look to find an ideal destination for the Spanish youth international, who can feature in any role in midfield. Preliminary talks are already underway as interested clubs look to figure out what it might take to sign the former FC Porto sensation.
Not just his agents, even the club are looking for potential options to offload the 23-year-old. While things haven’t worked out for him at City, Gonzalez is a top talent who can certainly get his career back on track with regular game time elsewhere.
