Lille midfielder André Gomes is “set to leave,” announced his coach Bruno Genesio at a press conference. A substitute during the away match against FC Metz on 6th February (0-0), the 32-year-old player has not been selected for tomorrow’s Europa League match against Red Star Belgrade.
Sidelined from the first team due to multiple physical problems, the Portuguese international, who has 29 caps to his name, has played only seven minutes in two Ligue 1 appearances this season. So, a year and a half after returning to northern France, the time now seems right for him to turn the page and discover a new league.
Having notably played for FC Barcelona, Everton and SL Benfica, Gomes is now reportedly set to join Columbus Crew SC, who finished twelfth in the Major League Soccer table last season. Under contract with Les Dogues until next June, the 2016 European champion is expected to be released in the coming hours.
